This weekend the heart of Wicker Park will become a hotbed of vendors, nonprofits, and bands working toward a common goal: to promote an environmentally friendly lifestyle. The Green Music Fest runs Sat 6/23 and Sun 6/24 from noon to 10 PM on Damen between North and Schiller, with two stages of music—the North Stage (booked by House Call Entertainment) and the South Stage (booked by Big Creek Productions). Music starts at 12:30 PM on Saturday and 2:30 PM on Sunday. Nineties guitar heroes Dinosaur Jr. headline the North Stage on Saturday, with support from Bailiff, Minor Characters, and Santah; on the South Stage Hey Rosetta! wraps things up, after sets by California Wives, Aktar Aktar, and Mark Rose. On Sunday the Raveonettes (see Soundboard) headline the North Stage, after Apteka and Viceroy; the South Stage lineup is Passafire, Oh My God, and Milano. Of course, the fest couldn't call itself green without facilities to recycle and compost trash, free bike parking, energy-efficient LED lighting, biodiesel generators, and the like—and it's also got the Green Village, where businesses and nonprofits will demonstrate eco-friendly products and provide information on sustainable practices, including urban gardening and beekeeping. (Let's hope the 10,000 promo postcards distributed by festival organizers are all made from recycled material.) The Green Kids' Area, open both days from noon to 5 PM, offers DIY musical-instrument building, recyled arts and crafts, and workshops on solar ovens and growing a "Garden in a Glove," plus the usual puppet shows, face painting, and family-friendly music. Admission is a $5 suggested donation. For more details see Fairs & Festivals listings by day, call 773-384-2672, or visit greenmusicfestchicago.com.
