The Green Music Fest returns to Wicker Park this weekend, its mission to promote sustainability by introducing attendees to environmentally conscious retailers and service providers; it also sets a good example itself by using biodiesel generators, requiring food vendors to provide compostable utensils, and the like. Held on Damen between North and Schiller, the festival hosts two stages of live music, one at the north end of the grounds and the other at the south. (Both are programmed by House Call, which books the Beat Kitchen and Subterranean.) The event runs from noon till 10 PM both days, and music begins at 2:45 PM on Saturday and 3 PM on Sunday. On Saturday Atlanta indie rockers Manchester Orchestra headline the North Stage, after a full-band set by local emo act Into It. Over It. (see Soundboard), Rockford's Joie de Vivre, and more; Los Angeles indie-rock band Everest tops the bill on the South Stage, with supporting acts that include local bands Brighton MA and Molehill. On Sunday, local Talking Heads tribute group This Must Be the Band headlines the North Stage, with support from Snowden (the Atlanta band, not the whistle-blower) and local acts Future Monarchs and Carbon Tigers; Chicago singer-songwriter Joe Pug wraps things up on the South Stage headliner, after Missouri southern-rock band Ha Ha Tonka, Great Divide, and the Western. Like most street festivals, the Green Music Fest hosts loads of local vendors selling food, arts and crafts, and more; there's also a Green Kids' Area at Damen and North, open from noon to 5 PM both days, which will encourage environmental awareness through children's music and an instrument-building workshop, among other things.
