Green Street Hooligans

This drama purports to take us inside the world of West Ham football rowdies, but its contrived plot about an American journalism student (Elijah Wood) makes it seem like one of those tourist postcards of telephone boxes. After taking a drug rap for his politically connected roommate and getting expelled from Harvard, the Yank travels to London to visit his sister (Claire Forlani) and falls in with his boisterous new brother-in-law (Charlie Hunnam), the leader of a local “firm.” The gentle Wood isn't very convincing as a bare-knuckle brawler (which bodes ill for his forthcoming role as Iggy Pop), and the movie settles into a payback soap opera reminiscent of West Side Story. Lexi Alexander directed. R, 109 min.
