Green Velvet (DJ set), Justin Long, Santiago, Ori Kawa Recommended Soundboard Critics' Picks

When: Wed., Dec. 31, 10 p.m. 2008

When Curtis Jones announced a few years back that he’d found Jesus on the bad side of a drug trip, the club world shuddered. Would the guy behind the outre hairstyles and twisted humor of GREEN VELVET, like so many other musicians who’d converted before him, lose his cool and embrace mediocre Christian pop? His answer came in the form of the 2006 single “Shake and Pop,” and as its title suggests it was a resounding “Nope.” His most addictive track since “Percolator,” “Shake” tops off its loopy, funked-up electro with a pleasantly nagging synth wiggle and mantralike lyrics that big-up nasty dance music. On his recent “LaLaLaLaLa (Inside My Mind)” Jones does a little proselytizing, but he seems to be pushing a fairly generic strain of spirituality, less concerned with dogma than the kind of “everybody feel good” vibe you can also get in pill form. —Miles Raymer
