GrimmFest Member Picks New Review (Theater and Comedy) The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Saturdays. Continues through June 1 2013

The magic and menace in Grimms' fairy tales give them allure, but it's their extraordinary efficiency—days or decades can pass in a single sentence—that gives them urgency. The eight short, original Grimm-inspired plays in First Floor Theater's new show are packed with magic and menace: a thief who can turn into various animals, a murderous cowgirl who may be a zombie, fairy stones that glow brighter the closer you get to home. But efficiency is in short supply, making for an uneven, ultimately wearying two-hour-plus evening. The pieces that aggressively compress action, like Greg Allen's charming, deliberately amateurish A Thief and His Master, transport us to beguiling parallel universes. Those that don't, like Bonnie Metzgar's strained, opaque Putin-in-Boots, lumber toward nowhere in particular. —Justin Hayford
