Given the length of the ongoing garage-rock revival, it's a little surprising that there hasn't been more of a surf-rock revival, since the two styles so often travel together. Portland band Guantanamo Baywatch makes a convincing case for getting one going, with a lo-fi, lowbrow approach that rumbles like Link Wray and avoids the cold-blooded pursuit of technique for technique's sake that's sunk so many surf bands. Traditionalists might take issue with how many of the songs on their new Chest Crawl (Dirtnap) have singing, but people pedantic enough to argue about the definition of surf rock maybe aren't the best ones to take advice from when it comes to good times. —Miles Raymer Pink Torpedo, Slushy, and Scoundrel open.
