Max and Dave Fleischer, the creators of Betty Boop, tried to beat Walt Disney at his own game with this lavishly produced animated feature, made in 1939. Imitating Disney's naturalistic style, they lost much of their characteristic energy and audacity; little of the rowdiness of their short films remains, though there are some finely executed moments. The Fleischers had more flair than Disney all along, but nobody bothered to tell them.
