Gun Hill Road

A homophobic ex-convict (Esai Morales) returns to the Bronx to find that he no longer fits into his family; his unfaithful wife (Judy Reyes) resents his three-year absence and dislikes the way he badgers their effeminate teenage son (actress Harmony Santana), who's secretly preparing for a sex-change operation. Santana, making her screen debut, outshines her veteran costars, infusing the son with tenderness, vulnerability, and urgency; she gives the coming-out narrative a freshness that's notably absent from Morales's ponderous soul-baring. Writer-director Rashaad Ernesto Green shows a nice feel for the streets but not enough skill to make the father's tragic fate seem like anything but a foregone conclusion.
