Gypsy Closing (Theater and Galleries) Member Picks Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Wednesdays-Sundays. Continues through April 1 2012

This spirited revival of the classic 1959 musical offers a deft balance of the familiar and the new. In retelling the story of burlesque star Gypsy Rose Lee and her domineering stage mother, Mama Rose, director William Osetek takes care not to offend traditionalists. There's nothing radical here. But he and choreographer Tammy Mader have also taken care to keep the material fresh and alive. It helps, of course, that Osetek's casting is flawless. As Mama Rose, Klea Blackhurst evokes the spirit of Ethel Merman, who originated the role, without slavishly imitating her. And Andrea Prestinario just shines and shines as Gypsy, the shy mouse who becomes a roaring lioness. —Jack Helbig
