Happy Karaoke Fun Time, an Improvised Musical!

When: Sundays. Continues through May 22 2011

The Shock T's open with witty improvised songs about anything from government corruption to a denim stool. Then the Happy Karaoke cast create a musical, taking off from audience suggestions. On the night I attended, the suggested topic was "Aston Martin," and we picked "Seasons of Love" from Rent to be the basis for the first song. The nonsensical result revolved around a woman who trades her baby for the English sports car, and the grown-up child's bout with homelessness and eventual marriage. Highlights included "Tale as Old as Time" (Disney's Beauty and the Beast) with new lyrics in which a man promises to kill the husbands of two mail-order brides. The players weren't always on the same page, but they ended solidly as backup singers to an audience member paying homage to the Backstreet Boys. --Marissa Oberlander
