Happy Men

Writer-director Roberto Santiago makes his feature debut with this 2001 bedroom farce about a philandering husband (Sergi Lopez) and his loving but exasperated wife (Aitana Sanchez-Gijon). The film mocks the hypocrisy and machismo of Spanish men, generating laughs from the husband's unending quest for oral sex and one-night stands, his bawdy one-upmanship of his friends, and his nerve-racking skirmishes with his spouse. Santiago resorts to more familiar shtick as well (Lopez's domineering mother, his interrupted tryst with a secretary), and the plot chronology is hopelessly jumbled, yet his intentions are fundamentally serious. In Spanish with subtitles. 93 min.
