Hard Headed Heart New Review (Theater and Comedy) The Short List (Theater) Recommended

When: Oct. 4 2009

In three solo works, Blair Thomas tackles three different kinds of puppetry and proves himself a master of each. Don Cristobal is a ribald, crowd-pleasing Punch and Judy show; Saint James Infirmary uses doleful marionettes to create an eerie, haunting interpretation of the blues standard; and in The Blackbird, shadow puppets float behind scrolls of translucent paper that contain images and text from Wallace Stevens's poem "Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird." Thomas's inventiveness and technical expertise are impressive, but it's the remarkable expressiveness of his creations that has stayed with me. He doesn't just animate wood, cloth, and paper forms--he somehow endows them with souls. --Zac Thompson
