Hateship Loveship

Rated R 102 minutes 2014

Adapted from a short story by Pulitzer Prize-winner Alice Munro, this jumbled drama gets decent mileage out of actress Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids) but is hindered by a subpar script that fails to translate Munro's characterizations and intricate plotting to the screen. Wiig plays a mousy, naive housemaid looking after an old man (Nick Nolte) and his teenage granddaughter (Hailee Steinfeld), who maliciously fools the maid into thinking her drug-addict father (Guy Pearce) is in love with her; unfortunately screenwriter Mark Poirier dilutes this conflict with too many subplots and some clunky exposition. Wiig, in her most serious role to date, shines nevertheless, her occasional comedic digressions enlivening the otherwise dour mood. Liza Johnson directed.
