Heads Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through July 18 2009

Inspired by beheading videos, E.M. Lewis's claustrophobic hostage tale alternates between two sets of civilian prisoners in Iraq, the absurdity of one duo providing breaks from the intensity of the other. The absurd pair--journalists whose bickering dialogue and wearisome backstories are delivered with maximum shrillness--unintentionally gave me a taste of wall-clawing captivity. In the other cell, Arch Harmon beams quiet loneliness as long-term prisoner Harold, whose relationship with Caroline, his new cellmate, threatens his hard-won stoicism. Harmon's creepily authentic portrayal brings humanity to a bipolar script that thankfully refuses to stoop to a storybook ending. Part of the Alcyone Festival. --Keith Griffith

Price: $10-$20, festival pass $50
