When: Wed., Nov. 28, 9:30 p.m. 2012

Transatlantic string trio Hear in Now swing from austere postclassical compositions to knotty free improvisation to moody postbop on their self-titled debut album, released earlier this year by Rudi Records. Chicago cellist Tomeka Reid, New York violinist Mazz Swift, and Italian bassist Silvia Bolognesi came together three years ago at the behest of a jazz-festival organizer in Italy, hit it off, and decided to stick with it. The music on Hear in Now more than justifies that decision: from its most restrained and delicate interludes to its most extroverted and brawny outbursts, it overflows with joy, a quality that comes through even more clearly when the trio performs live. This is the group's first local show since the album's release, and because it was recorded more than two years ago and Hear in Now has been playing together regularly ever since, I expect the tunes to have even more immediacy, depth, and luster now. —Peter Margasak Jeff Parker opens and Lawrence Peters spins.
