To the Editors:
I was so moved by Grant Pick's story about Brendan Hedges ["Life After Death," September 26]. I could feel the inconsolable loss of his parents and friends leap through the words on the pages. Senseless death is always tragic, but the loss of a young man who was so loving and talented cuts right to the heart.
Mike Hedges's contribution to the young people at the Audy Home is invaluable. His strength, integrity, and ability to continue with his work after the loss of his son are what make the world one in which I can continue to believe.
Why we can't help prevent someone in Ricky Phillips's state from hurting others, I'll not even venture a guess. Ironically, Mike Hedges and his dedicated colleagues might have prevented Ricky from killing Brendan, or at least steered him in the direction of help, before this tragedy occurred.
Thank you for publishing this haunting story. Lastly, I would like to contribute to the music scholarship established in memory of Brendan. Would it be possible to publish or send me the address?
Grant Pick replies:
