Heidi

The venerable old pro Allan Dwan, who directed his first film in 1911 and his last in 1958 (with 400 titles in between), filmed this Shirley Temple version of the Johanna Spyri children's tale in 1937; it's far from being a personal work, but as always with Dwan, it's the best movie imaginable from the limited material at hand. With Jean Hersholt as the kindly grandpa who takes orphaned Shirley in, and Arthur Treacher, Sidney Blackmer, Sig Ruman, and Mary Nash.
