Heist Play The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Nov. 10 2013

In this 2009 play, Mitch Vermeersch borrows some film-noir tropes—a shadowy world full of twisting plots, femme fatales, and easily conned saps—to weave a tale that tries mightily to work on the stage. It doesn't, in part because the genre is played out (there are a lot of other noir wannabes out there) and in part because Vermeersch's story becomes so complicated we stop caring. It doesn't help that many in Allison Shoemaker's cast aren't flexible enough to manage the hairpin emotional turns Vermeersch puts his characters through. Christine Vrem-Ydstie, for example, looks right as a woman men would kill for, but her performance lacks grit. —Jack Helbig
