Heist Play Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Mondays-Wednesdays, Sundays. Continues through Aug. 26 2009

The Ruckus Theater's smart but self-indulgent debut production focuses on three losers who team up to commit the perfect crime--and then to make real money by writing a screenplay based on their scheme. The script, by company member Mitch Vermeersch, appropriates the hallmarks of the noir style: terse, tough dialogue, convoluted plotting packed with red herrings and double crosses, and lots and lots of drinking. Under Allison Shoemaker's direction, the acting is solid (despite some flubbed lines on opening night), and the between-scenes music--including recordings by Tom Waits and Billie Holiday--suits the story. But after an entertaining start, the play unravels in its third act. Trimming a good half hour would maximize the work's entertainment value. --Albert Williams
