Held Up

An Arizona convenience store is the setting for most of this sweetly mediocre comedy, which includes light drama and few laughs. Nia Long abandons fiance Jamie Foxx after discovering that he's spent their house money on a car with an eight-track tape player. She spends the rest of the movie at the Las Vegas airport, waiting to see whether he'll stop her from boarding a flight home to Chicago. He spends the rest of the movie inside the store, held hostage with several other quirky patrons by a desperate armed robber with a heart of gold. The expectation that bigotry will lead to violence creates an intriguing tension at times, but the movie aims better than it shoots. Steve Rash directed a screenplay by Jeff Eastin; with Barry Corbin, John Cullum, Michael Shamus Wiles, Eduardo Yanez, Sarah Paulson, Sam Gifaldi, and Jake Busey. 91 min.
