Hello Human Female The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Wednesdays. Continues through April 28 2010

Replicant meets girl, replicant loses girl, replicant gets girl back in Matt Lyle's goofy romantic fable, which he also directs. Thirty-seven-year-old virgin Tamela (Allison Tolman) goes on a Match.com date with a mad professor, but falls for his built-on-a-dare assistant, Blork. Her overprotective mother then sends the creature on a quest to prove his worth. Some jokes wear thin and the ending feels rote, but primitive cartoon projections add sly visual wit to the bare-bones staging, and Tim Lee's uni-browed, loose-limbed Blork is utterly beguiling. Tolman finds the right balance between sweet and stupid, while Joey Cranford chews scenery to mostly satisfying ends as the evil scientist, Tamela's mother, and a cornpone grandpa. --Kerry Reid
