Hello, My Name Is Doris

Rated R 90 minutes 2016

After more than a decade doing TV, writer-director Michael Showalter (The Baxter, Wet Hot American Summer) returns with another of his wacky but endearingly sweet rom-coms, this one about a May-December office crush. Sally Field is touching and funny as the title character, an eccentric old accountant who’s lived for years with her hoarder mother on Staten Island. When the older woman dies, Doris finds herself free and lonely and promptly falls for the handsome young guy, played by Max Greenfield, who's just joined her Manhattan office. When Doris follows him into the NYC club scene, her dowdy-hip outfits make her an unlikely sensation, but Showalter never allows the wild fish-out-of-water comedy to vulgarize the yearning at the heart of his story. The fine supporting cast includes Wendi McLendon-Covey, Stephen Root, Peter Gallagher, and Tyne Daly.
