Henry IV

The seeds of academicism apparent in Marco Bellocchio's Leap Into the Void and The Eyes, the Mouth blossom forth in this careful, handsome, and dull 1984 adaptation of the Pirandello play about a mad aristocrat who believes he is a medieval German king. The distanced style serves only to underline the already obvious meanings while forestalling any deep involvement with the drama. Still, any film that lets you look at Marcello Mastroianni and Claudia Cardinale for 95 minutes can't be all bad.
