Henry V Closing (Theater and Galleries) Free The Short List (Theater)

When: Saturdays, Sundays. Continues through Aug. 23 2009

Mounting Shakespeare's Henry V outdoors without amplification on a long, open stretch of grass bordered by twin bicycle paths beside a busy street under an O'Hare flight path presents inherent problems. Perplexed cyclists make regular cameos, the audience sits without the possibility of shade for two hours, and just about anything--trucks, planes, stiff breezes, an actor facing three-quarters upstage--renders speech inaudible. Jemma Alix Levy's solution is to keep her 16 actors within a few feet of the audience, but that eliminates the possibility of meaningful stage images, and without a set to reflect sound the cast of this Muse of Fire Theatre Company production still expend nearly all their energy just trying to be heard. The intricate political machinations that might provide drama receive little attention. --Justin Hayford
