Mikio Naruse adapted novels of Fumiko Hayashi for several by his films before turning to her autobiography for this episodic 1962 biopic. She escapes her life as the child of poor itinerant peddlers, only to find more poverty doing humdrum jobs, then working as a bar hostess. Her first husband is a bigamist; the second, enraged by his own lack of success, beats her. Hideko Takamine's superb performance evokes the writer's passion and sadness in a single glance, and Naruse makes great use of black-and-white 'Scope, his compositions heightening the dramatic confrontations, the lighting and blocking reflecting Hayashi's mix of tenaciousness and passivity. Also known as A Wanderer's Notebook. In Japanese with subtitles.
