Her Name Is Zelda

Zelda Kaplan, 85, designs loud, daffy costumes of African fabric and wears them to New York nightclubs and gallery openings, where various creeps and scenesters greet her as a walking affirmation of life. Dressed like a normal person, she also travels to African villages to buy more cloth, commission some tailoring, and hector the locals about women's rights. Mona Eldaief and Nicole Sampogna's numbingly inspirational DV portrait (2003) is a testament to how boring eccentricity can be. The rough cut I saw ran 63 minutes; the version to be screened is reportedly 15 minutes shorter.
