Hero of the Year

Polish director Feliks Falk's dark, cynical sequel to his 1978 Top Dog, about a provincial entertainer (Jerzy Stuhr) trying to get off the bureaucratic blacklist for his Solidarity-tainted past. Falk's only a perfunctory stylist, and his film sometimes seems as gray and dispirited as the society it examines, but the performance he gets from Stuhr, as a scrambling opportunist who uses an ideological innocent for his own professional advancement, provides some unsettling insights into Jaruzelski-era conformity and paranoia (1986).
