Heroes The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Wednesdays-Sundays. Continues through Nov. 29 2009

Three old French World War I veterans plan a metaphor-belabored escape (they'll follow the river past the cemetery to the top of the hill) from the rural convalescent home where they've moldered for years. Newly translated by Tom Stoppard, Gerard Sibleyras's 2003 play offers lots of harmless humor and some poignant moments, but has nothing of substance to say about friendship, war, aging, disability, or death. The uneven three-man cast of James Bohnen's Remy Bumppo production entirely lack French sensibilities. More to the point, since they're given little chance to play the boredom that purportedly crushes them and therefore don't seem to need to escape, the play doesn't need to happen. Still, Mike Nussbaum's sparkle-eyed glances as the good-natured nebbish Henri reveal truths far deeper than any in the script. --Justin Hayford
