Hey! Dancin'! Hey! Musical! Closing (Theater and Galleries) Member Picks Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through May 31 2014

It's a happy day for Chicago theater when the folks at the Factory get trashy and stupid. This cunningly crappy musical, set in 1986 (with astutely hateful hair and fashions), follows Halle and Trisha, high school besties whose showbiz dreams become reality with an appearance on cable-access dance party Hey! Dancin’! For 90 minutes the cool kids muscle the losers out of the spotlight, host Randy Massingill tries to get in Trisha's pants, and the station manager struggles to maintain his sobriety. Kirk Pynchon and Mike Beyer's vulgar, hokey adolescent fantasy skips along giddily under Matthew Gunnel's fleet-footed direction. Laura McKenzie's era-capturing songs ridicule teenage angst and American musical comedy with equal precision, culminating in the sublimely terrible love duet "Dry Hump My Love." —Justin Hayford
