The versatile actress Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air, The Departed) was raised by Ukrainian Orthodox parents who eventually expanded the family's religious observance to include other Christian fellowships, including Pentecostalism. This gives her a valuable perspective as star and director of this thoughtful drama, adapted from Carolyn S. Briggs's memoir This Dark World, about life in a Christian fringe community. Farmiga plays a devoted Christian who follows her hippie husband into a fundamentalist cult; though she makes a valiant effort to support him, she soon begins butting heads with their fellow congregants over issues of sexuality and gender equality. The movie, to its credit, recognizes that the quest for spirituality sometimes leads to another pew.
