Him and Her: Three Short Stories | Annoyance Theatre | Theater & Performance | Chicago Reader

Him and Her: Three Short Stories Closing (Theater and Galleries) Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Sundays. Continues through Aug. 16 2009

Derrick Aguis and Molly Willbanks share such exquisite onstage chemistry--to say nothing of quick wit, sharp timing, and a delicious sense of irony--that almost anything they might do would be entertaining. In two of the three uncredited 20-minute plays about impossible romance offered here, they spend most of their time doing almost nothing as they engage in the inarticulate, dead-end exchanges of estranged lovers and first-daters. Under Ryan Bernier's subtle direction, they turn the most mundane moments--"You like music? Wow, me too!"--into absurd, aching portraits of people struggling against loneliness. The one piece that deals with an exceptional situation--a radio DJ talking a caller down from domestic violence--falls comparatively flat. --Justin Hayford
