Hippolytus Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays, 8 p.m. Continues through May 30 2010

Wayne Shaw's new drama puts a contemporary spin on the ancient Greek tale of Queen Phaedra and her destructive passion for her stepson, Hippolytus. Here Phaedra is a screenwriter, husband Theseus is an aging actor, and Hippolytus is a dissolute, no-talent narcissist who wants to star in stepmom's next movie. Despite the modern Hollywood setting and pornographic dialogue, Shaw's heavy-handed attack on moral hypocrisy in Hollywood feels old hat and cliched. Chicago newcomer Matthew Gall gives the one performance worth watching in this Ludicrous Theatre Company production, as a Bible-thumping preacher with a thing for prepubescent girls. --Albert Williams
