Histories Minor Closing (Theater and Galleries) Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays. Continues through Feb. 26 2009

This evening of three short pieces centered on historical figures varies in quality, but that's not a problem: the playwright, Mark Chrisler, is fascinating even when he fails. The best of the lot is Uma Leitura Fisica Na Universidade de Saol Paolo, a small fantasia in which the great physicist David Bohm--dropped from Princeton in 1951 for refusing to cooperate with the House Un-American Activities Committee--meets with certain metaphysical obstacles as he tries to give a lecture. At Least One Reason Not to Sing in a Madhouse pits 19th-century journalist Nellie Bly against her sanity as she goes undercover to expose conditions in an asylum. And in Barnard Battles the Chicago Fire, the pioneering photographer George Barnard has a discourse with the title conflagration as it prepares to eat his life's work. Kevlyn Hayes's production for Found Objects Theatre Group is as smart as the material. Part of the Rhinoceros Theater Festival. --Tony Adler
