HMS Pinafore Closing (Theater and Galleries) New Review (Theater and Comedy) Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Wednesdays, Fridays-Sundays. Continues through June 16 2013

Light Opera Works' shipshape staging of Gilbert and Sullivan's 1878 comic operetta strikes a near-perfect balance between goofiness and elegance. Gilbert's libretto, loony and literate in equal measure, spoofs class snobbery and incompetent authority with its topsy-turvy tale of a sailor in love with his captain's daughter, who is unwillingly betrothed to the First Lord of the Admiralty. Director Rudy Hogenmiller and conductor Roger L. Bingaman are lucky to have found two superb newcomers for the romantic leads: as lovers Ralph Rackstraw and Josephine Corcoran, Dane M. Thomas and Sarah Kelly have wonderful voices, excellent diction, good looks, and just the right touch of sincerity to make their absurd dialogue hilarious yet strangely touching. LOW veterans Michael Cavalieri and James Harms are excellent as Josephine's father and husband-to-be, and the choral blend is glorious. Three cheers and one cheer more for this Pinafore.—Albert Williams
