Holiday

A misfit teenager (Juan Arregui) is sent by his divorced mother to spend spring break with his aunt, uncle, and cousins, and during the course of his stay he wrestles with feelings of sexual attraction to a leather-clad biker (Diego Paredes). The story takes place in Ecuador during the banking crisis of the late 90s, which drove unemployment up to 17 percent and necessitated a massive government bailout (sound familiar?). I was much more interested in this calamity than in the listless coming-of-age tale that occupies most of the screen time, but the economic stuff plays out peripherally and behind closed doors as the uncle struggles to rescue his business. Diego Araujo directed this 2014 drama. In Spanish and Quechua with subtitles.
