Hollywood Hotel

A late Warners musical (1938), built around a radio program hosted by Louella Parsons. The Busby Berkeley numbers are few and restrained, yet it's a fast, light, very entertaining piece of fluff, with Dick Powell as a big-band crooner in Hollywood for a screen test and Rosemary Lane as a waitress who stands in for a temperamental star (played by her sister Lola, who reveals some unsuspected satiric talents). Benny Goodman appears with his orchestra and his legendary quartet (Hampton, Wilson, Krupa) in its prime; among the numbers they perform is the debut of “Hooray for Hollywood.” With Ted Healy, Alan Mowbray, Hugh Herbert, Glenda Farrell, and Allyn Joslyn.
