What little exposure Holy Fuck has gotten in the U.S. came during stints backing avant-rapper Beans, but at home in Toronto this dance cabal is an all-star team. You could call them a jam band, but it'd be more accurate to say they're an electro group that uses real instruments and makes it up as they go along. The fluid lineup--as many as six dudes total--sometimes features two drummers, and everybody else has their hands full with synths, bass, guitars, samplers, tape machines, effects pedals, and even a couple noninstruments (the band imitates the sound of turntable scratching with a 35-millimeter film synchronizer). They don't write songs, and the tracks on their recent self-titled album for Dependent were drawn from two unrehearsed live-to-tape sessions--most of the time, though, you can hardly tell. The techno thunder can get pretty seriously thumpy and clubtastic, and they do motorik Teutonic drone even better--imagine what the Juan McClean's most stoned band practices would sound like. And despite leader Brian Borcherdt's hippie-dipshit description of Holy Fuck's mission--"capturing a vibe in a moment and interacting with people"--their live show is rumored to be capable of inducing ass-shaking even in non-Canadians.
