HomeGoing Closing (Theater and Galleries) New Review (Theater and Comedy) The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through April 3 2011

A white suburban widow decides to move back to Englewood, the now mostly black southside neighborhood where she grew up, and her adult children react as if she were headed for Baghdad. Turns out she's reconnected with an old flame with whom she had an interracial dalliance in the 1950s, just before her parents hightailed it to the suburbs. Playwright Paul Barile raises several still-vexing urban issues--white flight, crime and poverty in some predominantly black areas of the city--only to tiptoe around them, choosing to focus instead on his heroine's sentimental journey and her children's resistance to change. It doesn't help that none of what happens seems very pressing to anyone in Lauren Pace's sluggish NUFAN Ensemble production. --Zac Thompson
