Hood Internet, Team Bayside High, Driftless Pony Club Recommended 18+ Agenda Soundboard

When: Fri., Dec. 30, 10 p.m. 2011

The irritating popularity of radio-rap covers by twee-pop acts like Pomplamoose and Karmin proves that some people still think combining hip-hop and indie rock is inherently hilarious, but local production duo the Hood Internet aren't among them—at least not anymore. Sure, some of their early rap-indie mashups cross over into novelty-number territory, but STV SLV and ABX love both genres and have always tried to fuse them synergistically rather than just for laughs. For their new self-titled mix tape (available as a free download from trendy clothing line Mishka) they've assembled some combos that look awkward on paper—it's easy to be skeptical of a track on which gangsterish MC Freddie Gibbs, rap-punk Telli of Ninjasonik, and indie chanteuse Elizabeth Harper of Class Actress all coexist, especially before listening to it, and it doesn't help that the track in question is a cover of the XX's dreamy "VCR." Fortunately my first impulse upon actually hearing it wasn't to laugh but to dance. —Miles Raymer See also Saturday. Team Bayside High and Driftless Pony Club open.
