Hopewell, Velcro Lewis Group Recommended Soundboard

When: Wed., May 27, 9 p.m. 2009

So far this spring has been a good season for heavy, psyched-out guitar boogie, with Crystal Antlers, Pontiak, and this Brooklyn five-piece all releasing albums that ride bluesy riffage out into wild places where dreamcatchers and blotters of orange sunshine roam free. Hopewell’s new Good Good Desperation (Tee Pee) demonstrates their expertise at expanding—or occasionally exploding—a simple melody line, turning it into a thunderous, effects-drenched behemoth that’d sound better around a desert bonfire than in a rock club. To put it in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas terms: in their tune “Stranger,” right around the three-minute mark is where you want your lawyer to throw the tape player into the bathtub with you. The Velcro Lewis Group opens. -Miles Raymer
