Hot Cha Cha The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays. Continues through Aug. 24 2012

Hosted by Les Flattery (whose send-up of burlesque-style dancing, performed to "Sex Bomb," is one of the funniest bits of the evening), the Kiss Kiss Cabaret summer show alternates between striptease and comedy, with juggling, magic tricks, and stand-up thrown in. In keeping with this edition's carnival theme, performers tell fortunes and make balloon hats (penis- or boob-shaped) in the lobby beforehand. There's plenty of talent and creativity in evidence here: a "sexy moth" act that begins in a translucent cocoon, a ballerina who performs a striptease en pointe. But Hot Cha Cha never quite jells, often losing momentum between—or even during—acts. Sound system troubles on opening night didn't help. Still, I admired the final number, in which the Kiss Kiss Coquettes do a reverse strip on an unlit stage, gradually covering themselves with glow-in-the-dark paint. —Julia Thiel
