On The Warning, released stateside in June by DFA, this English combo sounds like the Beta Band with a better ear: the melodies are hooky, the beats are mesmerizing, the vocals soar or coddle, and all the elements conspire to create sweeping rushes of romance spiked with subtle levity. The album leads off with a kinetic breakcore blast ("Careful"), a slickery dance-floor anthem ("And I Was a Boy From School"), and a languid pop gem worthy of Stereolab or the Junior Boys ("Colours"). There's nary a bum tune here, and the title track is a real standout, with its tickling synth play and an absurd chorus ("Hot Chip will break your legs, snap off your head / Hot Chip will put you down, under the ground") that's a bit like having Al Stewart threaten to tear you a new one. Shy Child and Born Ruffians open. Hot Chip also spins at an afterparty downstairs at Smart Bar, which starts at 10 PM with a set by Nick Nice; it's free with admission to the show, $10 without, and you must be 21. a 9 PM, Metro, 3730 N.
