How to Be Loved

The spiritual wreckage left behind in Poland after World War II lies at the heart of this 1962 film directed by Wojciech Has. A woman on a plane trip to Paris (Barbara Krafftowna) remembers her past in a series of flashbacks: as an actress during the war, she shelters (and carries on an affair with) a colleague who fears arrest (Zbigniew Cybulski), but when the Germans flee Poland her lover disappears, leaving her to face punishment for the collaboration she engaged in to protect him. Has?s tight compositions convey the claustrophobia of the occupation and underline the film's theme: in an impossibly conflicted world there are no good choices, and every pathway leads to a different prison.
