How to Create a Rumba

Cuban expat Ivan Acosta (El super) hopes to trace the deep roots and numerous branches of Cuban music with this 2001 video documentary. Shot in Miami, New York City, and Union City, New Jersey, it contains some dynamic performances (including a ceremony for Abakua, the Afro-Cuban secret society) but these are overshadowed by talking-head sequences of prominent U.S.-based musicians (Chico O'Farrill, David Oquendo, Juan Pablo Torres, Jose Fajardo). Acosta succeeds in exposing the music's countless rhythms and styles, but this becomes a numbing stream of names and nomenclature. 73 min.
