How to Survive a Fairy Tale The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Saturdays, Sundays. Continues through Feb. 26 2012

The standard compliment paid to children's shows is that they appeal to young and old alike. This one is definitely bucking for that laurel. Not only does it feature comic references to Gone With the Wind and Ikea's Bjursta line of furniture, but James Grote's script is built around an irony the adults in the crowd are likely to appreciate: a pair of fairy tale characters try to hide their true identities from their son, leaving him totally unprepared when he finds himself transported to the Enchanted Forest. Trouble is, Grote weds that promising conceit to a plodding, banal didacticism ("Being nice to someone can help them change for the better"). I don't know what the kids in the crowd thought of that, but it sure killed the fun for me. —Tony Adler
