Human, Too Human | Chicago Reader

Human, Too Human

Louis Malle visits a Citroen plant in Brittany for this unfocused 1974 documentary. Given the prohibitive cost of miking interview subjects, Malle's decision to shoot the assembly line sequences without dialogue may have been sensible, but it also represents the workers as automatons. This throws them into even greater contrast with the chattering bourgeois consumers of the middle section, who practically wrap themselves around the latest cars at a crowded trade show. Back at the factory for the close, Malle becomes more aggressive: a peekaboo shot of one woman's open smock reveals not only her lack of regulation garb but also the voyeurism of his cinema verite. In French with subtitles. 72 min.
