Hump Night | Apollo Theater, studio | Improv/Sketch | Chicago Reader

Hump Night Member Picks

When: Wednesdays. Continues through May 28 2014

This weekly variety show, hosted by Kevin Mullaney, provides an important service to future historians: it collects every cliche in Chicago performance at this very moment, September 2013. I attended the season premiere, which featured a female comic who proudly identified as a "cunt," two self-consciously adorable girls with bangs and a ukulele who sang about their student loans, a storyteller, and a group of improv performers. That night, the individual spoken word won out: storyteller Lily Be and stand-up Liza Treyger were sharp and hilarious. The improv, however, was uninspired, and members of the ensemble, possibly because they had never worked together before, were sometimes slow to pick up on one another's cues. And as for the singers, the Fruit Flies—they just made my teeth hurt. —Aimee Levitt
