Hunting and Gathering The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through June 27 2010

Despite a few tasty moments, this Theatre Seven of Chicago production of Brooke Berman's 2008 slacker comedy doesn't last long on the palate. Berman uses the same tired anthropological conceit that underpins Defending the Caveman: some humans are hardwired to hunt and others to be hunted. But in Tracey Kaplan's exaggeratedly neurotic performance, the behavior exhibited by Ruth--a hapless New Yorker searching for a real home and true love--suggests nothing so much as thoroughly modern passive aggression. A one-time solo performer, Berman doesn't have a grasp on how to build scenes in a cohesive way. Her Manhattan is a place where people narrate their lives rather than live them. --Kerry Reid
