Hypnotic Teen Media

Selected by four Chicago high school students, this eclectic collection of films and videos is better than many professionally curated programs. Derangement is one theme: Cliff Roth's well-merited reediting of Ron and Nancy in The Reagans Speak Out About Drugs (1988) shows the duo in a pro-dope TV address (“drugs open your eyes to life”). Osamu Tezuka's Broken Down Film (1985) amusingly turns a trite cartoon into a projectionist's nightmare: the frame line appears, the film seems to skip in the gate. William Farley's Made for Television (1981) is one of the best send-ups of the medium I've seen, a dense collage of images and random factoids that elucidates the meaninglessness of our ceaseless glut of information.
