I Am Who I Am (The Story of Teddy Pendergrass) Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Aug. 14-Sept. 28 2008

Created by Jackie Taylor for Black Ensemble Theater with Pendergrass’s assistance, this musical bio veers toward the hagiographic but is still rousing. Rashawn Thompson as the younger Teddy seduces every woman in the front row while Kevin McIlvaine as the older Teddy storms through a medley that includes the irresistible “Get Up, Get Down, Get Funky, Get Loose.” There are some genuinely affecting moments, too, courtesy of Rhonda Preston as Teddy’s unsinkable mother. Jimmy Tillman’s hard-charging band holds it all together. (KR)

Price: $45
